India News
1. Noted Economist Arvind Panagariya the first Vice-Chairman of the NITI Aayog took charge from today.
2. Today Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said that the government planning to launch “Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana’ in current month to help farmers to get the enough water supply round the year.
3. Union Government appointed Pournima Gupte as the member (actuary) of Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDA). She is the first woman appointed as actuary of IRDA. Since 2011 the position was vacant, after the R Kannan retired from IRDA.
4. The Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath announced on Monday that the Delhi Assembly Elections 2015 would be held on 7 February and the counting would take place on 10 February. Delhi has 70 assembly seats.
5. On Monday for the first time the newly constructed broad gauge track opened in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. A goods train with 43 wagons reached at New Haflong station.
6. On Monday evening Director of Space Application Centre (SAC) Alur Seelin Kiran Kumar appointed as the Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He is the senior most scientist in ISRO. Former ISRO Chairman K RadhaKrishnan retired on 31 December 2014.
7. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley adopted four villages as part of Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana. He adopted Karnali village, Pipaliya village, Valida village and Baglipura village of Vadodara district in Gujarat.
8. Today the National Green Tribunal decided to set up a committee to clean the river Yamuna. If anyone found discarding religious items in river will be fined Rs 5000.
9. During the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in Gandhinagar, Adani Enterprises and US-based SunEdison signed an agreement to form joint venture to the build the largest solar park at Mundra in Gujarat. The solar park project will have an investment of around 4 billion US dollars.
10. Union home minister named Uttarakhand DGP B S Sidhu in the selection committee of the President’s Police Medal. IPS Officer B S Sidhu is the first DGP from the Himalayan state to be named on central police award’s panel.
11. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) coveted Sun Temple at Konark, Odisha with Adarsh Monument Tag. Three other monuments of eastern India were also coveted with Adarsh Monument Tag. Other three monuments are Vaishali-Kolhua in Bihar, Hazarduari Palace in Murshidabad district of West Bengal and Rang Ghar in Sibsagar (Sivasagar) district of Assam.
12. Today DMK chief M Karunanidhi announced N Anand’s candidature for the February 13 bypoll for the Srirangam Seat, the seat which is vacated by AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.
13. Nihal Chandra Gupta, 94, was the oldest among the candidates in the Cantonment Board Elections and the winner. He became winner from the ward six of the Cantonment Board.
14. On Monday the Supreme Court continued the ban on ‘cock fighting’ a popular sport of Andhra Pradesh’s rural areas.
Business News
1. Reserve Bank of India Governor, Raghuram Rajan and Mario Draghi President of the European Central Bank (ECB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday. The main aim of the MoU is to deal with cooperation between two institutions, policy dialogue and exchange of information.
2. Kotak Mahindra Bank launched Jifi Savings Account, a social savings account which can be managed via Facebook and Twitter. The Jifi Savings Account will take care of financial planning, online shopping etc.
3. Wipro’s chairman Azim Premji’s eldest son Rishad Premji’s, chances of becoming the vice-chairman of the company. Rishad Premji is currently the chief strategy officer of the company and expected to join the board after the retirement of executive director and CFO Suresh Senapaty.
Sports News
1. On 12th January, Cristiano Ronaldo won the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or award for the title of world’s best football player for a third time. He won the earlier titles in year 2008 and 2013.
2. On 12th January, Joachim Loew awarded as the coach of the year award at the FIFA Ballon D’Or ceremony.
3. On 12th January, Colombian Star James Rodriguez awarded as goal of the year at the FIFA Ballon D’Or awards. He got awarded for his performance in World Cup 2014.
4. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq announced that he will retire from T20 cricket and ODI after 2015 World Cup. He confirmed continuing with Test Cricket.
Science News
1. US based National Space Society (NSS) announced on Monday that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Mars Orbiter Programme team has won 2015 Space Pioneer Award in the Science and Engineering category.
2. Scientists have discovered a new ‘super mosquito’ hybrid that has resistant to insecticide-treated bed nets. The super mosquito has the ability to prevent the spread of malaria in humans.
3. Science found a nasal spray that can improve Alzheimer. The nasal spray contains man made insulin and was studied on 60 adults diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer or amnesic mild cognitive impairment.
International News
1. Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha appointed as the 21st Chief Justice of Bangladesh on 12th January. He will be the first non-Muslim Chief Justice in Bangladesh. He will take over the duties from January 17.
2. Former Foreign Minister and Former Assistant Secretary at NATO Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic became the first female president of Croatia. The 46 year old president would take charge from 19th January.
3. Taylor Negron an actor and comedian of 1980’s comedy “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” passed away on Saturday 10th January due to cancer. He was 57.
