1. Bank of Baroda first PSU bank to join Chillr platform
i. Bank of Baroda has become the second bank after HDFC Bank to join the Chillr payment platform which enables peer-to-peer payment through a mobile application.
ii. Only those whose banks are integrated with Chillr can use the application for remitting funds. However, customers of any bank can receive funds using Chillr.
iii. This app is presently made available on Android platform for fund transfer and will be made available for IOS and Windows platform shortly."
iv. It added that utility bill and merchant payments on Chillr app will be enabled for Bank of Baroda customers soon. The Chillr application was developed by Kerala-based start up Mobme Wireless. It was subsequently farmed out into a separate company promoted by Sony Joy, founder and CEO Chillr.
2. Reliance AMC to acquire Goldman Sachs AMC for Rs 243cr
i. In its first ever acquisition, Reliance Capital Asset Management (RCAM) today announced takeover of global giant Goldman Sachs' mutual fund business in India for Rs 243 crore in an all-cash deal as yet another foreign player exits the Rs 13 lakh crore Indian MF market.
ii. The deal, under which RCAM will acquire all 12 onshore mutual fund schemes of Goldman Sachs Asset Management India with total asset under management of Rs 7132 crore, would also make Reliance MF the exclusive fund manager for the government's ambitious Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) Exchange Traded Fund.
iii. GSAM India currently manages 12 mutual fund schemes, including 10 ETF schemes, and is the largest ETF provider in India. It has a total AUM of Rs 7,132 crore (USD 1.1 billion) as of September 30, 2015 which includes Rs 2,172 crore (USD 334 million) of AUM in the CPSE ETF for which GSAM India is currently the exclusive fund manager.
iv. The transaction has been approved by the boards of the two companies and is expected to be completed in the current fiscal, RCAM's parent firm Reliance Capital said in a statement.
v. Reliance Capital is the financial services arm of Anil Ambani-led business conglomerate Reliance Group and is also present in insurance, brokerage and wealth management among other areas.
3. Snapdeal appointed Anup Vikal as CFO
i. E-commerce firm Snapdeal on 20 October 2015 appointed Anup Vikal as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Vikal replaced Aakash Moondhra, who had quit the company in October 2015.
ii. Before joining Snapdeal, Vikal was working as the CFO of Aircel since January 2013.
iii. Before Aircel, he worked as the group-CFO & head of strategy and IT with budget carrier IndiGo's parent InterGlobe Enterprises, wherein he handled multiple responsibilities like incubating and developing new business, mergers and acquisitions and portfolio management. He also served as a part of Bharti Airtel's finance team for around seven years before joining Colt, where he worked for a few years.
iv. Anup Vikal learned mechanical engineering from NIT, Surat. He obtained his MBA degree from South Gujarat University.
4. Justin Trudeau elected as Canada’s new PM
i. Justin Trudeau of Liberal Party has been elected as 23rd Prime Minister of Canada. He is eldest son of Canada’s former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau who was in office for 16 years and led the country till 1984.
ii. With this Justin Trudeau (age 43 years) became the second youngest Prime Minister of Canada and the first to follow a parent into office. The youngest Prime Minister was Joe Clark (age 40 years) of Conservative party who was elected to office in 1979. Trudeau is a former school teacher and was elected as Member of Parliament for first time in 2008 and again in 2011 and 2015.
iii. In the 2015 Canadian Federal election, Liberal Party has emerged victorious by winning 185 seats (54% votes) in 338 member House of Commons (Lower House of Parliament).
iv. Conservative Party led by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper has emerged as largest opposition party by winning 99 seats by securing 29% votes. It was followed by New Democratic Party (NDP) of Canada led by Thomas Mulcair which has won 44 seats.
5. Reva Khetrapal selected as Lokayukta of Delhi
i. Former Delhi High Court judge Reva Khetrapal has been selected as Delhi’s new Lokayukta. The post was lying vacant since 2013 after retired Justice Manmohan Sarin had relinquished office after completing five-year term.
ii. With this, she will become the fourth Lokayukta of Delhi and shall have five years terms as per Delhi Lokayukta and Uplokayukta Act, 1995.
iii. Justice Khetrapal was chosen as head of anti-corruption ombudsman unanimously by a four-member panel. The panel included Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Justice of Delhi High Court G Rohini and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta.
iv. Reva Khetrapal had practiced in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court from 1975 to 1991. She was elevated to the HC in 2006 and she retired in September 2014. In 1991, she was appointed sessions judge and additional district. Later she was posted as special judge (narcotics) in 1994.
6. Veteran Kannada film-maker K.S.L. Swamy passes away
i. Renowned Kannada filmmaker Kikkeri Shamanna Lakshminarayana Swamy (KSL Swamy) passed away in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He was 77. He was popularly known Ravee and was also Kannada film producer, actor and playback singer.
ii. Swamy was born in 1938 in Kikkeri in then Mysore Kingdom of British India. He had started his cinematic journey as an assistant director to legendary filmmakers such as G.V. Iyer and M.R. Vittal.
iii. Swamy made his directorial debut with Kannada film Thoogudeepa in 1966. In his 49-year celluloid career, he had directed as many as 37 films. His directed films such as Gandhinagara (1968) and Bhagya Jyothi (1975) and Malaya Marutha (1986) were successful hits.
iv. His is film Jamboo Savari (1989) had won the National Award for the Best Children Film. He is also recipient of Padma Bhushan (2013) and B. Saroja Devi National Award (2013).
7. AB de Villiers named brand ambassador of MRF
i. Tyre manufacturing giant MRF Limited on 20 October 2015 named South African batsman AB de Villiers as its brand ambassador. As per company norms, the association is for a period of three years.
ii. AB de Villiers, the ODI captain of South Africa team, in his new role will endorse the company’s products and services through advertising campaigns and other such promotional programmes during the term of the agreement.
iii. AB de Villiers who captains the South African One Day International (ODI) team is regarded as the current best batsman in the world and one of the greatest of all time. He holds the record for most Test innings without registering a duck (78), before being dismissed for nought against Bangladesh in November 2008.
iv. He also holds the second-highest individual score by a South African batsman in an innings, with 278 not out.
8. Yuki Bhambri is first Indian to enter top 100 since 2010
i. Yuki Bhambri on Monday cracked the coveted top-100 bracket by achieving a career-best rank of 99, a reflection of his consistent progress in the last few months.
ii. In his last three ATP Challenger tournaments, the 23-year-old Yuki won the Shanghai Challenger, was a runner-up in Taiwan and ended a semifinalist at the USD 125000 Tashkent event last week.
iii. Yuki is the first Indian player since 2010 to enter the top-100 and only the third in a decade-and-half to be in the list. His next assignment is the Pune Challenger, starting October 26 after he pulled out of the Bangalore event due to some niggles.
iv. Not only Yuki but Saketh Myneni is also making a steady progress on the tour. He won the Vietnam Open on Sunday and is now ranked 166. Somdev Devvarman though has dropped further to 181. India now have three singles players in top-200 in a rare feat for country's tennis players.
v. Rohan Bopanna is country's highest ranked player in doubles at number 15, followed by Leander Paes (36) and Purav Raja (96). In the WTA rankings, Sania Mirza continues to be world number one player.
9. Golf: Anirban Lahiri wins Asian Tour Golfer of the Month award
i. Anirban Lahiri added another feather to his already crowded cap by winning the inaugural Hilton Asian Tour Golfer of the Month award. As part of Hilton Worldwide's newest partnership with the region's Tour, the Asian Tour Hilton Golfer of the Month award aims to recognise outstanding efforts of Asian Tour members both at home and abroad.
ii. Lahiri was voted as the winner based on his stellar performance from June to September, with subsequent awards based on monthly achievements as the Asian Tour is now back in full swing.
Ranked 39th in the world, the Indian star enjoyed a spell-binding opening nine months which saw him win two events sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
iii. Lahiri also finished joint fifth in the PGA Championship for India's best performance in a Major in August and became the first from the country to earn a spot with the Presidents Cup's International Team.
iv. Lahiri won the award ahead of Thai duo Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Prayad Marksaeng. The three players were nominated by a selection panel before going into a voting process.
10. Sehwag retired from all forms of International Cricket, IPL
i. Indian cricketer Virender Shewag on 20 October 2015 retired from all forms of international Cricket and Indian Premier League (IPL).
ii. Sehwag revealed his decision after signing up to play in 2016 Masters Champions League Twenty20 tournament in Dubai. Masters Champions League, a UAE-based Twenty20 tournament requires its participants to have retired from all international formats.
iii. An aggressive right-handed opening batsman and a part-time right-arm off-spin bowler, Sehwag played his debut One Day International in 1999 and joined the Indian Test team in 2001.
iv. In April 2009, Sehwag became the only Indian to be honoured as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for his performance in 2008, subsequently becoming the first player of any nationality to retain the award for 2009.
