Know PPSC :- The Joint Public Service Commission, the precursor of the Punjab Public Service Commission, with its writ running from the Khyber Pass to the Jamuna near Delhi, was born at Lahore on May 1, 1937. In the wake of the Partition, the Punjab Public Service Commission resurged in February, 1948, at Shimla with its revised jurisdiction extending over the then province of East Punjab. Following the merger of the States of Punjab and Pepsu, it shifted to Patiala on Nov. 1st, 1956. On 1st Nov 1966, its territorial jurisdiction again decreased due to the formation of the States of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

THE FUNCTIONS OF PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION:

• Recruitment by conduct of Competitive examinations.
• Recruitment by conduct of screening written examinations.
• Recruitment by selection through interviews.
• Advising on the suitability of officers for satisfactory completion of their probation period and confirmation of service in the post.
• Advising on the suitability of officers for appointment on promotion as well as transfer on deputation.
• Advising the Government for continuation of adhoc promotion/ appointment beyond the period of one year.
• Advising the Government on the matters relating to framing and amendment of Recruitment Rules.
• Disciplinary cases relating to Group ‘A’ and ‘B’ officers of the State Government.

Apart from this, Appointments of Civil Judge Junior Division in the judicial services of the State are also within the purview of the Commission, since besides the High Court, Commission is also required to be consulted by the Governor while making such appointments.
